Do all customers use a cancellation form to cancel a document? Couldn't this be done with metadata and/or a workflow that could get an authenticated approval to cancel?

No, not all of our customers cancel documents.

Currently we do not support modifying generations yet via workflow but it is slated to add some create/modification features to workflow soon. I'm not sure what your situation requires to determine when it is time to cancel a released generation but hypothetically I'll assume that when a new generation released for a particular type of document the old generation should be canceled. The flow would look something like this:
1. We'd first want to setup a workflow process that modifies the generation it's passed changing the revision to cancelled upon approval.
2. We would have this process run automatically by creating a workflow process trigger. This trigger would be setup to execute that process, on a Release Document command for a particular doc type. This trigger can be further customized to say on a release document command, when the document has this doc type, this category, these keywords, etc.
This takes care of the automation part, now it's just up to the workflow process to send out email to ask permission of an individual(s) to cancel a generation, wait for a response and then finally cancel the generation if it was approved by the one or more individuals required.
Like I said this will hinge on the generation modification abilities we're looking to add in the near future, but yes. As long as we can understand and translate your normal business rules for cancelling said documents into steps and rules in a workflow process then is can most certainly be done.
