Why won't a reserved Word document render?

I have a Word document that was reserved via SharePoint that I placed in TechDoc and it won't render. Render generates the following error:

Render Task: WordRender: Word failed to load the document (err=6015)...
This document must be rendered manually because something prevented the automated rendition from being created.

Why won't it render?

Render uses OLE automation to render documents. Unfortunately, OLE Automation will not open a Word document that is still reserved by SharePoint. When you manually open a SharePoint-reserved document, you receive a dialog that allows you to click "Read Only" to still open the document and view it in read-only mode. However, when using OLE automation, Word will simply terminate with error 6015 instead of giving Render the chance to "choose" read-only. The only workaround is to re-save the Word document without the SharePoint reservation. Here are the steps to remove the SharePoint reservation:

  • Open the document with Word and click the "Read Only" button when prompted.
  • Click File, "Save As" and click a location.
  • When the "Save As" dialog comes up, under Tools, select "General Options...", erase the "Password to open" if there is one, erase the "Password to modify" if there is one, uncheck the "Read-only recommended" if it is checked, and click OK.
  • Adjust the "File name" if necessary and click Save.

You should now be able to open the document without being prompted. If so, reserve and replace the document in TechDoc with this new version of the document, release it, and the document should now be rendered to PDF without any problem.
