Office Rendering Fails When EMET Is Installed on Render VM

Please be aware that Microsoft's Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) can cause rendering of Office documents to fail. Render actually uses Microsoft Office products to render various Office file formats to PDF. After installing EMET, some users have reported that Office file formats can no longer be rendered and that the various Office products will fail to start if you bring up the Render VM and attempt to start them interactively.

What virtualization environments are supported for Render?

As of TechDoc Release 8, the Render virtual machine is supported under Hyper-V, and most VMware products. Previous versions of TechDoc also allowed the use of Microsoft Virtual Server, but as of TechDoc Release 8, the only supported Windows operating systems are Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012. As of Windows 2008, the Microsoft Virtual Server product as gone away.

What are the typical licenses needed for a virtualized render 7 client?

Render 7 is a standalone virtual machine and requires the end user to purchase the following licenses for each instance they stand up:

  • Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Office Professional 2007
  • Microsoft Office Visio Professional 2007
  • Microsoft Office Project Standard 2007
  • Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro
