Running TechDoc 7 on Windows Server 2012!

We've had many customers come to us and ask if TechDoc 7 is compatible with Windows Server 2012. The release of TechDoc 7 predated the release of Windows Server 2012 by nearly a year so we were unable to certify Windows Server 2012 as a platform capable of running TechDoc 7. With a couple of IIS configuration steps, you can make it work.

If you have already tried to run the TechDoc 7 installer on Windows Server 2012, you have seen the message saying:

"This version of TechDoc has not been tested on this version of Windows. It has only been tested on Windows 2003 and Windows 2008 and may not work on this system. Do you wish to continue anyway?"

If you continue on through the installer, everything works except for the configuration of IIS. Windows Server 2012 ships with a new version of IIS (Internet Information Services), version 8. IIS 8 does not support by default, the same WMI and Scripting Tools used in version 7 and back. Without these WMI and Scripting Tools, TechDoc 7 is unable to configure IIS. Fortunately, there is a way to enable these so TechDoc 7 can install successfully! Follow these step by step instructions:

  • Launch the Server Manager utility. The Server Manager utility is located by default at the lower left hand corner of the desktop on the icon bar. Server Manager can also be located on the Start menu using the search function.
  • Once the Server Manager loads, click Add roles and features.
  • Once the Add Roles and Features Wizard loads, navigate through to the Server Roles section.
  • The Web Server (IIS) role should have already been added, but if not, select to add it. Note: If the Web Server (IIS) role was not already installed, you will also need to add the role services ISAPI Extensions, ISAPI Filters, and Request Filtering.
  • Now navigate to the section where role services can be added for the Web Server (IIS) role.
  • Expand all of the Web Server (IIS) role services displayed. There should be a node labeled Management Tools; expand this node. Under Management Tools check the box to enable IIS Management Console, IIS Management Scripts and Tools, and all role services under IIS 6 Management Compatibility (this includes IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility, IIS 6 Management Console, IIS 6 Scripting Tools, and IIS 6 WMI Compatibility).
  • After selecting all of the role services to add, click Next and allow Windows Server 2012 to complete the installation and configuration of IIS and all of its role services.
  • You are now ready to run the TechDoc 7 installer! If you've already tried to run the TechDoc 7 installer and had it fail, it's safe to re-run it again.

After the TechDoc 7 installation completes, you should be able to open a web browser, navigate to the TechDoc Home Page page (http://localhost/servlet/dm.web.HomePage) and log in! We've tested thoroughly on the Windows Server 2012 platform and found no other issues.
